Preventing dehydration and skin chafing when you have diarrhea

When you have diarrhea, your electrolyte, glucose, and potassium levels will be depleted. Stay hydrated to avoid dizziness, weakness, or even death (in acute cases of diarrhea).

Avoid drinks like alcohol, apple juice, and caffeinated drinks, which may make aggravate diarrhea. To make stools less watery, drink carrot juice or ginger ale.

If you have frequent diarrhea, you may also suffer from skin chafing due to overexposure to bacteria and moisture. This can be treated with the following home remedies.

  1. Oatmeal bath – Clean chafed skin with plain water or an oatmeal bath. To make an oatmeal bath, fill one end of a nylon stocking with two cups of oatmeal. Swirl the nylon stocking through the tub water, then wring out the oatmeal in the stocking. Remove the oatmeal from the tub, then soak in the oatmeal water for 15 minutes. If the bath is for an infant, use 1/3 cup of oatmeal.
  2. Dry the affected area properly – Gently pat the chafed skin with a soft towel or cotton balls. Alternatively, you can dry the area with a hair dryer set to the lowest heat setting. If treating a baby with chafed skin, let the skin dry by removing their diaper for several minutes. Refrain from using baby wipes with alcohol when changing diapers.
  3. Apply oils – Chafed skin can be moisturized with oils. Combine a tablespoon of olive oil with five drops of water, then whisk the mixture. Apply the mixture to clean skin. You can also open cod liver oil capsules and pour the oil over the chafed area. Alternatively, you can use comfrey, jojoba, lavender, olive, sandalwood, sweet almond, or tea tree essential oils to soothe chafed skin.
